Erroneous science on “UV Grenades” in the movie “Blade 2″
If you ever watched the movie “Blade 2”, there is a device called “UV Grenade” which blasts away the vampires by generating enormous amount of ultraviolet light. Did you ever wonder how they built this UV grenade? Well, the answers lies on Blade’s tech assistant named “Scud” which is played by Norman Reedus. There is a scene in the movie where “Scud” is looking for fluorescent lamps in the garbage bin. According to the transcript of the movie itself, Scud is looking for used fluorescent lamp tubes so that he can extract the phosphor and make it as a UV Grenade. Obviously, this idea is so wrong. First, the ultraviolet light generated by the fluorescent lamp comes from the mercury gas inside the sealed fluorescent tube. Second, the function of the phosphor inside the lamp is to actually “ABSORB” ultraviolet light and convert it into white light. The phosphor used on fluorescent lamps cannot possibly generate ultraviolet light.
